2016 Swing Into Spring Recap
May 16, 2016
On Saturday, May 14th AIDS Care Ocean hosted the second annual Swing Intro Spring fundraiser Gala at the Roger Williams Park Casino and attendees were dressed to the nines in vintage inspired 1920’s costume. AIDS Care Ocean State is thankful for everyone who attended, supported the agency and made the evening such a spectacular success, well done!

We could not of asked for more perfect weather as guests took turns posing with two era inspired antique automobiles. The night began with prohibition themed cocktails, passed hors d’oeuvres and upbeat ragtime live piano and vocals from Rhode Island’s own Danny Arico. The 20’s infused fun didn’t end there, the headline band Super Chief Trio, entertained guests throughout the night with swing, big band and sweet jazz. Additionally, AIDS Care Ocean State was so excited to welcome to the stage for the third year in a row, the beautiful and talented Gianna Izzo who performed soulful covers of artists like Adele and Lana Del Rey.  Guests were entertained by the effervescent and adored Jacqueline DiMera our volunteer host and MC for the night. Volunteer and staff sold pearl necklaces for our raffle which included wonderful prizes such as tickets to see the Red Sox at Fenway park, a night out to see Bullets Over Broadway at the Providence Performing Arts Center, Dinner at Bravo Brasserie, wine & food baskets, flower arrangements and much much more! The Volunteer Development and Planning committee certainly out did themselves this year and brought Swing Into Spring to a new thematic and gorgeous level never before seen.

The main attraction for the evening was the AIDS Care Ocean State Award Ceremony. Our Honorary Guest was President Emeritus of AIDS Care Ocean State, Founder of FACTS House and former President/CEO of AIDS Care Ocean State, Paul Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald was awarded many citations from Mayor Jorge Elorza, Congressman David Cicilline, Congressman James Langevin and Council President Luis Aponte. ACOS Board Chair announced that FACTS House, where our grassroots organization began, will from this time forward be known as THE FITZGERALD HOUSE, The Foundation of Courage and Compassion and presented Fitzgerald.

In recognition of their outstanding and dedicated service over the many years as well as their amazing work they’ve done with the 2015-2016 Drag Bingo season, the agency was thrilled to name Stephen Gaskin, aka Haley Star, and Gary Jacques, aka LaDiva Jonz, as our 2016 Partners in Philanthropy.

We were also pleased to recognize Keith Dube, as our 2016 Volunteer of the Year. Dube, a former ACOS staff member, returned to the agency and with his support help organize and run ArtBeat, Bingo and Swing Into Spring.

Next, the agency awarded Scott Mitchel with the 2016 Agent of Change title for his remarkable and transformative services he has provided to Rhode Island and beyond relating to HIV/AIDS.

We would like to thank each our wonderful and generous sponsors for the evening: The Miriam Hospital, Providence City Council, Rentals Unlimited, University Medicine, Barbara Sokoloff Associates, The Stable, RI Realty Management Corp.
